I finally developed a roll of film from October’s trip to a Civil War reenactment in Plain, Washington. Here are a few favorites (especially the mother and daughter with the ice cream cone). I am always more interested in the reenactors wandering around than what’s happening on the battlefield.

The once prosperous gold mining town of Old Molson, under a blanket of snow. Definitely a highlight of our trip through the Okanogan Highlands.

I wanted to make one more trip to the lonely highlands of Okanogan County before we say goodbye to Washington in a couple of months. So on Saturday we drove north, north, and farther north along the Columbia River, finally making a u-turn at the Canadian border. Here are some of my favorite spots along the way. The old homesteads below are in Old Molson and Bodie, two mining ghost towns.

The sunlit Columbia River Gorge was a great reward for driving through the sleet and slush of the mountain pass. As we drove alongside the river I looked back and saw a huge cloud of fog following us. We pulled over and and spent a few minutes watching it drift by, cooling the colors and softening the landscape as it went. Magical! The prettiest moment of the weekend.

After two and a half years in Washington, there are still so many nooks and crannies of this area to explore. Many within an afternoon’s drive. My favorite stops from yesterday’s drive north up the Kitsap Peninsula, and then on to the Olympic Peninsula: quaint Port Gamble and windswept Fort Flagler. The reason for the trip? Glorious sunhine!

It was barely light out when this came as an early morning surprise. I could start every day this way. Making a full arc across the sky, my lens wasn’t wide enough to fit it in.

Into the Frozen Winter

“Into the frozen winter, darkness, stillness, ebb. Dec. 18 – my last chemo. Dec. 21 – the darkest day. Then bit by bit the light returns.”

A new journal portrait to follow this one and this one. The author wrote this towards the end of her cancer treatment. She reflected on how her illness seemed to correspond to the changing seasons. For a larger version, click on the image.
